Electrical panel upgrades in Denver

Before we talk about replacing anything, we come look at what you actually have. Sometimes you need a new panel. Sometimes you don't — and we'll tell you either way.

Do you actually need a new panel?

A lot of homeowners call already sure they need a panel replacement — and a lot of others call asking, "do I really have to replace this?" Either way, we look before we recommend. Age by itself doesn't mean a panel has to go. What matters is its condition, its capacity, whether it can still be properly supported with the right parts, and what you're planning to run in your home now and down the road.

No scare tactics. If your panel is fine, we'll tell you it's fine. If the real problem is one failed breaker, we'd rather quote that repair than sell you a whole new panel you don't need. We'd rather earn your trust than make one sale.

Signs a panel may need attention

These are some of the things that tell us a panel is worth a closer look. One of them doesn't automatically mean replacement — they're the reasons we come out and evaluate.

Breakers that trip regularly

Repeated tripping can point to an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or a panel that's out of room.

You still have a fuse box

Fuses instead of breakers usually means the service is well behind what a modern home draws.

Signs of heat or damage

Scorching, melting, discoloration, corrosion, or any sign of water intrusion in or around the panel.

Lights dim under load

Lights that dip when big appliances kick on can be a sign the service is stretched.

You're adding a big load

EV charger, hot tub, electric range or dryer, AC or a heat pump, an addition, or a finished basement.

No room left in the panel

Every slot is full and you need more circuits. Sometimes that's solvable without a full replacement — more on that below.

An older or discontinued panel

Certain older equipment (see below) is worth evaluating for condition, capacity, and whether the right replacement parts are even still available.

What we actually look at when we come out

Panel replacements and service upgrades get a free, in-person estimate. We send an estimator to your home, and we evaluate before we recommend. Depending on your setup, that can include:

The panel itself

Condition, age, manufacturer and equipment type, signs of overheating or corrosion, available circuit space, and how many circuits you're running now.

Your service & capacity

Existing service amperage, panel and meter capacity, the meter and service equipment, the mast or weatherhead where applicable, and whether service comes in overhead or underground.

Grounding & protection

Grounding and bonding, water bonding, the service disconnect setup, and whether surge protection is present.

Your loads — now and planned

Your current major loads, and what you're thinking about adding: an EV charger, hot tub, electric range or dryer, AC or heat pump, a basement finish, or an addition.

We take the measurements and photos we need to build your proposal — and when it's practical, the estimator puts the proposal together while still at your house, so you can look at the real scope and price in person instead of waiting days for an email.

Smaller jobs, too. Plenty of smaller, predictable electrical work qualifies for a free estimate as well. Send us a couple of photos and a quick description, and when we can reasonably price it from that, we can often give you a free rough estimate right over the phone — a starting point that a site visit can adjust. If the problem is unknown and needs hands-on troubleshooting, that's a $300 diagnostic (two-hour minimum) — and a true priority emergency is $400.

Straight talk

When we'll tell you not to replace it

This is the part a lot of companies skip. If your existing equipment is in acceptable condition, properly sized for what your home actually needs, not showing overheating or serious corrosion or water damage, still supported with the right parts, and has usable circuit space (or a practical way to add it) — then you may simply not need a full panel or service replacement.

Age alone isn't a reason. And well-made equipment from manufacturers like GE, Square D, Siemens, or Eaton isn't something we'll tell you to rip out just because it's been on the wall a while, as long as that particular installation is still suitable and in good shape. If the real issue is a failed breaker or another repairable part, we'll quote the repair — not an unnecessary replacement.

A smaller fix that sometimes works

When a subpanel is the smarter option

A full panel doesn't automatically mean the whole service needs replacing. If your existing equipment is in good condition, your service has enough electrical capacity, the panel is equipment we can properly service and extend, and the real problem is simply that you're out of breaker space — then adding a properly designed subpanel can be the more sensible, more affordable answer.

Depending on your specific listed equipment, properly rated tandem breakers can also sometimes free up space (though that isn't an option in every panel). What we won't do is use a subpanel to paper over a service that's genuinely overloaded or unsuitable — that's not a fix, it's a hidden problem.

Matching the job to the house

Panel replacement vs. full service upgrade

"Panel upgrade" can mean very different scopes. We match the work to what your home actually needs instead of defaulting to the biggest version.

Panel-only replacement

If your meter and service equipment are still suitable, we can often replace just the panel without rebuilding the whole service. That generally means the new panel and breakers, plus verifying and updating grounding, bonding, and surge protection as needed. We test the finished work, label the panel, confirm everything operates, and clean up. A straightforward panel-only swap in the existing location can usually be done in about one working day — though every install is different.

Complete service + panel upgrade

When the whole service needs modernizing or more capacity, the project is more comprehensive. Depending on your property, that can involve the meter equipment and housing, the load center and new breakers, the main service disconnect, the mast and weatherhead and overhead service components where applicable, service conductors, a whole-home surge protective device, the grounding and bonding system, a service outlet, and complete labeling. Not every component is replaced on every job — the scope depends on your existing installation and the proposal you approve.

Meter and service work — overhead mast work, underground/lateral configurations, main disconnect work — is handled according to what your existing installation actually requires. Your proposal spells out the panel and breaker scope your home needs; we plan for the circuits your house runs rather than a one-size number.

Older equipment

Older and discontinued panels

Some older panel types get extra scrutiny from us — not because of a name alone, but because of condition, capacity, and whether appropriate listed replacement parts are even still made. Equipment we look at especially carefully includes:

Federal Pacific / FPE / Stab-Lok · Zinsco · certain Sylvania / GTE-Sylvania Zinsco-type equipment · Bulldog / Pushmatic · Challenger.

With some of this obsolete equipment, we're reluctant to keep extending or working on it when the right listed replacement parts aren't available, or when the panel itself shows condition or capacity concerns. What we evaluate is the whole picture: manufacturer, condition, whether it can still be properly supported, capacity, available components, and any signs of deterioration. If yours checks out, we'll say so. If it doesn't, we'll explain exactly why in plain terms.

Planning ahead

We plan for today and tomorrow

We don't just look at what you use now — we ask what you're planning to add. If your existing 100-amp service is in good condition and genuinely has enough capacity for your real and planned loads, we won't tell you to replace it just because a bigger service exists.

But when a major service replacement is truly necessary, we'll often talk with you about whether it makes sense to plan for more capacity — because you're already investing in substantial equipment, and a little headroom can leave room for future loads like an EV charger. The goal is simple: don't install a service today that you immediately outgrow when you add what you were already planning. Load requirements depend on the actual installation and the applicable electrical calculations — so we plan around your specific home, not a rule of thumb.

Getting ready

After you approve the proposal

Once you approve, we prepare and order the equipment your project needs and schedule the installation. Sometimes scheduling can move quickly when materials and workload allow, and you'll get clear expectations about the planned power interruption before the day arrives.

Preparing for installation day

Your power will be off for a planned stretch during the work. A few things help:

Keep the fridge closed

Keep the refrigerator and freezer shut during the outage to hold the cold in.

Pre-condition the house

In hot weather, cool the home before we shut down when practical; in cold weather, warm it up first. Keep doors and windows closed to hold that air.

Clear the work area

Give us room around the panel and service equipment.

Keep family & pets clear

Everyone stays out of the active electrical work area while we're working.

What actually happens — and how long the power's off

We show up at the scheduled time and go over the plan with you.

We stage the work with the power still on

The first couple of hours generally go to preparing and staging while you still have power, depending on the installation.

We warn you before shutdown

Before we cut power, we tell you again and generally give about 10–20 minutes' warning so you can get ready.

The changeover begins

Then the electrical changeover starts. Essential loads are targeted for restoration within roughly 2–4 hours after shutdown, with broader restoration commonly within about 4–6 hours. Every install varies.

A panel-only replacement is generally a one-day project. A complete service project can run across up to two days — Day 1 for the major changeover and getting your electrical system back on, and Day 2 when needed for final details, checks, and finishing work.

A real difference in how we work

Refrigeration and essential loads come first

When we bring power back, we prioritize the things that matter most in your home — refrigeration, heating, and cooling when the weather makes it important. Our working procedure is to have refrigeration restored within four hours of shutdown. If the changeover runs longer than planned, we have a backup procedure using temporary generator power when it can be provided safely.

Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed during the outage and the cold holds surprisingly well. We prioritize getting refrigeration back, and we have a backup-power plan if the work runs long — you don't need to do anything with generators yourself.

Your common questions

Can I stay home? Will you tear up my walls?

Can I stay home?

Absolutely — stay or go, whatever's more comfortable. A lot of folks hang around during the prep and head out once we tell them the power's about to go off. If you stay, we just ask that family stays out of the work area and pets are kept safely away. On very hot or cold days, get the house comfortable and settle pets before the outage.

Will you damage my walls?

For a straightforward panel replacement in the existing spot with no major new circuit work, disturbance inside the home is generally minimal — we mostly need interior access to confirm circuits work after we're done. Installations create some debris around the equipment, but we clean our work area. If drywall access, relocation, or new circuits are actually needed, we tell you before we proceed — no surprises, and no promise of "zero drywall" on jobs where that isn't real.

Thinking about moving the panel? We can evaluate relocation, but it's worth knowing it can add real scope, because existing circuits may need to be extended or rerouted. When moving it isn't necessary, keeping the equipment in a good existing location is often the more cost-effective choice.

Protection that comes with the work

Whole-home surge protection & grounding

On applicable service and panel projects, we commonly include whole-home surge protection. It adds a layer of defense against damaging transient voltage surges that can hit your appliances and electronics. To be straight with you: it's real protection, but it isn't magic — no device makes your home immune to lightning or guarantees nothing ever gets damaged.

We also evaluate and update grounding and bonding as part of appropriate service work — the system that keeps your home's electrical equipment at a safe reference and helps protective devices do their job.

We're not done when it turns on

Testing, labeling, and the final walkthrough

Energizing the new panel isn't the finish line. Before we call it done, the electrician verifies circuits operate, checks 240-volt loads with the right test equipment, checks receptacles, operates the lights, tests GFCI protection, checks the whole-home surge protector, and does a final visual inspection of the workmanship — supports, strapping, and connections. Then we complete the panel directory so your breakers are clearly labeled, not left as a guessing game.

A panel you can actually read

We label the directory properly. The finished panel should look organized and professional — not a wall of unmarked breakers.

A walkthrough at the end

We ask you to come look at the finished work and we explain what was installed — the new panel and breakers, the labeling, the surge protector, any grounding improvements, the service equipment, what was replaced, and your warranty — in plain language.

Then we clean up. When we leave, the goal is simple: everything works, everything's labeled, the work area is clean, and the only obvious difference is the new equipment — not a mess left behind.

After the job

One-year workmanship warranty

We back our panel and service installation work with a one-year workmanship warranty. If something related to our installation isn't operating correctly, call us — that's a warranty callback, not another $300 diagnostic for fixing our own covered work. We prioritize getting back out to address legitimate installation-related issues. (Unrelated future electrical problems and formal warranty terms are handled separately.)
